英文摘要：The article examines the history of the terms “left art” and “the left in art” used in the Russian artistic life of the first third of the 20th century, how they penetrated literary and artistic discourse through the one of politics, and the way they were used by art critics and different artistic groups. It also studies the se- mantic shift of both the terms during the process of artistic evolution which brought them back into the political sphere. The fact that art critics eventually rejected the term “(the) left” to classify artists can be explained by abolition of all artistic circles formed in Russia during the 20th century and the creation of one single state organization with its uncompromising style of “Socialist Realism” that had to be adopted by all its artists.
