Contrary to the generally accepted idea that Spanish writers didn’t pay special attention to Russia for its remoteness, this paper attempts to prove the existence of this very attention and its specialness. In fact, Spanish people showed a keen interest in the culture of Russia, a country located at the opposite end of “the great European diagonal”, as the Spanish philosopher and essayist Jose ́ Ortega y Gasset once noted. Through a study of the image of Russia in Spanish literature, this paper reveals that the Russian image frequently served Spanish writers as a means of self-discovery and that the Russian theme sometimes nearly turned into a Spanish one.
