Self, Family and Society A Critical Review
The textbooks for secondary three and four were published in December 1984
and November 1985, respectively. The editorial committee issued revised editions
of the textbooks for these two grades in 1988 and 1989, but the passages and
content of the first and revised editions were not significantly different.
In addition to the textbooks, in May 1987 the editors of the textbooks published
a two-volume Supplementary Reading Book with stories of more than 50 charac-
ters to deepen students’ understanding of Confucianism. According to the editors,
these characters can be grouped into three main categories.
